The above photo is what the culprit was. I looked in the service manual and found the section on clutch cable adjustment. Tighten adjustment knob until no free play, turn back to loosen...

i doubt the pulling left bit is a gearbox issue. more likely a cv or wheel alignment issue.
the seals and small (rhs) bearing are easy enough, but the big bearing is hard to get if it needs...
I have done this,
- underneath you glove box (the hinges) there are some 'L' shaped pins that hold the glove box in place.
- the resistor is inside the WHITE container where the fan is located...
