    Are my wheels/tyres legal?

    Probably a dumbo question but I've just changed insurers and was going through the pds.
    I explained the wheels I had to aami and they said as long as they're legal, it's fine and I'm covered.
    99 pulsar should have, roughly, 175/75/14? I've got 205/65/15. They were on the car when the roadworthy was done so I assumed they are fine.
    But what would be classified as illegal?

    Edit. Here's a copy of what aami said Yes, we cover non-standard wheels as long as they are legal and the car is in a roadworthy condition.

    Basically, we cover all accessories and modifications on the car aside from the ones listed on the website when obtaining a quote, provided they are legally allowed to be on the car.

    Totally illegal, the size/profile is way too big, would look like you had baloons on the car too. Speedo error would be massively under-reading your speed.

    EDIT: Check the Tyre Placard in the glovebox for the factory tyre size. For every inch you go bigger in rim, drop 5 on the profile, for every step wider you go on the tyre, drop 5 on the profile.

    i.e factory SSS 195/55/15 to 205 wide tyres is 1 step, so 205/50/15 tyres is correct size. Moving up to 17" rims is 2 inches bigger, so 195/45/17 (which dont exist) closest is 205/40/17. Some 215/40 will also be correct size, but depends on the tyre.

    Your example of 205/65/15 is going to make the sidewall very large and should never have passed a roadworthy.

    I'm at work so can't investigate properly and may have mucked up my Tyre sizes. Speedo is accurate so let me check when I finish work.

    I'm back. Been stressing about my post since I read your reply.
    Sorry. Got the numbers wrong.
    Car currently has 205/50R16
    Sticker in glove box has 2 sets of numbers. Easier to post pic.

    But going on what you're saying, maybe they are still classed as illegal, which is a worry.

    Unless your rim width is less than 6.5", they're illegal no matter the tyre size really. And they're probably 7" wide at least.

    Should be 205/45/16 probably, but 205/50 could be close enough depending on the tyre brand.

    Thanks again Cozzm0. The types are horrible Bob Jane zenon Z7. I can't make out the details on the rim of what size the rim actually is. Either way, I think I'm gonna have to hurry up and find some money for standard rims and tyres. I've wanted stockies since I bought the car but finances keep saying no.

    The rim size will usually be cast into the back side of the hub where the wheel studs are so just need to whip a wheel off.

    (for future reference) if you're in vic:
    https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/regi...al-certificate
    ^ on that page is a pdf with the vicroads requirements. A lot of it talks about 4WDs so its hard to know what applies to regular passenger vehicles.

    Thanks Leroy. Took a look at that pdf but still a bit hard for me to understand, (and read on my phone screen)
    I'll go over it after work tonight.

    Those tyres and rims looks to be legally okay.

    In Victoria the maximum width of any replacement rim can't be more than 25mm, or one inch greater than the widest wheel specified by the manufacturer for that vehicle or model.

    The diameter of the tyre can't be more than 15mm more than manufacturer specifications,

    These are the listed diameters for the standard, and for your tyres - yours are 15mm larger than stock.

    185/65-14 --> 596mm
    205/50-16 --> 611mm

    Spectrix, thank you so much for putting it the way you did at the bottom with the sums. That all makes sense now. No idea how relieved I am about it. Still want plain old stock rims/tyres but struggling to find the money at the moment. At least it's still all legal as it is for insurance reasons.
