An early tick on the bucket list… when aged 20.

HOLDEN HR 186S

It was pearlescent blue and came with all accessories of the time. Even had the rear wheel spats. The only mod I made was to fit six inch chrome rims with Goodyear Grand Rally tyres.

There was only ever seven sold (licensed) in Western Australia, where I lived at the time in 1967, and I got mine with 45,000 miles in 1973.

It was the car that I had wanted since high school.

I had my HR for five years and still miss her. Took on a Holden HQ 253 V8 at the lights once, and kept beside it…

It was:

HOLDEN HR Premier Sedan 1967, with the 186S engine, coupled to the rare factory fitted Opel four speed gearbox manual transmission.

I have had one and will never forget it.

145 bhp. 0 - 100 in 10.0 sec. Not bad for 1967.
Engine: Holden 186 'red' motor, with factory fitted:
Double barrel carby.
Twin headers.
Lukey straight through exhaust.
Fully forged crank
Mild cam.

I appreciate classic cars, my first one was a classic car, but i don't know a lot about the old stuff so the rare options and stuff doesn't really 'resonate' with me personally.

Ever since I saw a group of Sunbeam Tigers tear up Philip Island at the Classic a few years ago, I've wanted a small (preferably British) convertible with a V8. My taste and logic has changed a bit since then so now I want to rat rod a sunbeam alpine and run a RWD ITB'd SR20VE.
But I don't want to deal with rust or too hard to source parts, so I'm still trying to plan my 'retirement build' that avoids as many headaches as possible.

Who remembers Norm Beechey's yellow Monaro 350? Earlier he had a green Monaro 327. We called him 'Uncle Norm'...

But my Holden HR 186 Special - prior to the beloved HR Premier 186S four on the floor - proved better, oh so much better.
There was a crowd in Victoria Park, Albany Highway (Perth), who did bench seat conversions. They would modify the front bench seat to allow for it to recline into three different positions, and then a full flat. When you picked up the rear seat squab and pushed the bench fold back into it… Guess what? I had a bed. The chicks loved it. And so did I… I had a piano in the HR constantly then.
